Minutes of the September 14, 2009 meeting were approved.
Publicity/Communication – updates: a report on the Legacy project appeared in the Daily Record. The logo was approve logo with changes to the lettering. Halpin will form a Media committee to advise on publicity, coverage and presentation of Centennial information. Making sure that we are up-to-date from newspapers to blogs and facebook. We will solicit members via committee recommendations and ML website.
Neighborhood events – there will be a meeting on Monday, Oct 26th at 10:30 at the Boro Hall to focus on the neighborhood event.
Community events: There were several updates on plans and budgets. The first event will be the kickoff, an old-fashioned type of Open House with music, art and activities for all ages. The budget was estimated to be $1,200. The committee approved the outline for the event and felt ready to form a subcommittee to run the event.
The 4th of July event will keep with tradition, family races at the Club in the morning and extra fireworks and flares around the lake in the evening. The committee agreed to pursue with the Recreation Commission engaging a Dixieland Band and expand public viewing access, perhaps at Lake Drive School and/or the Masonic Lodge. The committee will work with all lakefront homeowners to have flares for the 4th and to include their neighbors from other parts of town.
End of year celebration will close the Centennial year with a thank you luncheon for all who worked on the Celebration to be held at another historic location, the Station. After a sit-down lunch, slideshow and other overview, the group will go across to the Esplanade and bury a time capsule.
Overview of calendar: The committee discussed the range of events to assess the balance of activities for in terms of type of events, timing, history included, and whether there were roles for all parts of ML community – All ages, organizations, churches, schools, businesses. The committee agreed that more should be done for churches and the schools, and perhaps some businesses.
Budget: A rough budget suggests that the cost for the year will be $30-40K. These numbers will be revised in light of more precise event budgets, but it provides a rough target for fundraising.
Fundraising: Several options were considered. The fundraising committee agreed that a program with ads would compete too much with the football and town phone directories that come out each fall. They explored possibilities of an insert for the phone directory and handouts to go in fundraising letters.
The committee agreed to send out an appeal letter to residents and MLHS alumni by the end of the year. Further efforts can be undertaken afterwards if needed.
The fundraising committee presented other options for memorabilia to sell: a large metal coin for about $3.50 and sell for $10, and a beautiful map costing $10 and sell for $30. The committee agreed that these ideas should be pursued further and another jewelry store approached for comparative pricing.
Other items:
Memorials: All suggestions for memorials for the Esplanade Legacy project should be forwarded to HPC to consider.
Suggestion for an historic map of Mountain Lakes highlighting points of interest.
The next Steering Committee meeting will be on Nov 9th at 10:30am at Borough Hall.
