Summary 11/30/09
Mountain Lakes Centennial Steering Committee
Meeting Minutes, November 30, 2009
Committee Members Present: Halpin, Terlizzi, Von Sternberg, Barlow, Rusak, Wargo
Updates:
- Logo- final logo presented and approved.
- Kick-off Event- Nancy Bigelsen has agreed to chair the kick-off event and is currently working on a committee and final location. Nancy suggested that we select colors (mossy green and gold) to be used by our committee for all events, publicity, etc. She is investigating the cost to purchase tablecloths to use at all events throughout the year.
- Time Capsule- Pat found out that there was a copper box containing records from the “cornerstone laying”. No other details available but she plans to check with the Turkots, Mark Prusina and Christina in Borough Hall.
Cornerstone Greeting for next 100 years:
After much discussion, it was decided to put the development of a new cornerstone greeting on hold. Pat will get an estimate on a bronze plaque inscribed with the old cornerstone greeting. We will review the cost and possible dedication ceremony/location at our next meeting.
Schools:
The first meeting is planned for January. Kris will contact John, Chris and Kelly to determine date. The committee would also like to add members with children in all three schools. Diane Burch (BOE) will be approached to join the group.
Incorporating Music & Art into the Centennial:
Debbie found out that Rosemary Groves has a video of a past “Follies” production.
Suggestions included:
- The Follies could be the finale for the entire centennial year.
- Combine community & high school students for the production.
- Potential coordinators of the event: Laura Luc, Teri Mason & Susan Estes, The Menards, Sam Hazlett, Kal Chapman & Thaddeus DeCaprio or Mr. Mandela, the Spanish teacher at Briarcliff.
Budget:
See Meeting Agenda for a budget and revenue draft. Estimate for all centennial activities is approximately $25,000. A discussion on fundraiser ideas followed:
- John recommended that we consider a fundraiser with the Barn Theater. His office raised $4500 (250 tickets sold @$25) Finger food (desserts) were offered during intermission. He stated that it is minimal effort and that the ticket price could easily be raised. John will check on shows & the availability for an event this Spring.
- Carissa Wangness is willing to coordinate the merchandise fundraiser.
- A Solicitation Letter is critical to our efforts and should include a clearly stated goal and “giving levels” (come up with related names) plus a follow-up letter to acknowledge all donors to date. John volunteered to print out the letters at his office. The committee will purchase paper & envelopes. It would be nice to include our logo on top or as a watermark in the background of the letter. We need to check on need for Council approval prior to mailing. Also, where to send donations and whether check are payable to us or Borough. Stephanie will work on a draft of the letter and e-mail it to committee members.
- The possibility of publishing a program was briefly discussed again and it was decided that Maryann would set up a meeting with Jim Haessig to discuss possibilities, all committee members will be invited.
- Debbie will check on “fun facts” from 2011 to potentially use for a crossword puzzle (crosswordpuzzles.com is a potential source)
- Pat will research banners for the Boulevard & Midvale with the assistance of Kris.
Other:
Maryann informed us that Park Lakes and the MacDowell Club are working on centennial tie-in events.
Kris will work on reserving a van for the committee to take a historic tour of town on January 11th. Pat will contact HPC members to accompany us.
