Long Time Residents
100 Long-time Residents
These are over 100 Lakers who have lived in town for more than 40 years. Many were guests at the Taste of Mountain Lakes event. These are the people who have given time and support to the town and organizations over the years. All were to have their years recognized and wear their Centennial buttons and ribbons. These are the people who provide us with a link to the past, a reminder that the Market was once Yaccarrino’s; and the Station was once, well a train Station, and then the Phoebe Snow restaurant with amazing popovers. They also remind us about the times that were really tough, as well as the parts of life that were better back in the day. You make our town rich, and interesting, and warm.
This is our list – a work in progress – of Mountain Lakes residents who have lived in town for more than 40 years (though not necessarily consecutive). If anyone is missing, please let us know at ml100@mtnlakes.org or call Kris Barlow, 973-299-1528.

i am writing this on behalf of my mother and late father they/we lived in ML from 1951-1980 or so so except for a 3 year assignment in houston we lived there my father passed away from a massive coronary at 48 years but my mom went to work and maintained our house on melrose rd which was designed by the same architect i believe LEE who also did the pot office and library to her credit mom kept the proverbial fires burning until she moved back south and remarried but we have fond memories of a public/essentially private prep school and we swimmers coming late to play tag at birchwood after hours lol and hiding under the dock if the police were spotted in any event my parents spent their life in ML and would be there had dad not died. after that we all returned south i remember fizzie tablets in the biology room fish tanks i know but wasnt me i remember a black bear coming up the drive of our neighbours, fred and alice moses while here aged mom was planting and she looked back and saw him and ran screaming to the house bear was shot in our driveway all my swim buds came to see the stains the citizen paer wrote a wild west article about it all it was a fine place to live but i hear it has changed, perhaps less insular anyway my mom is 90 and going strong she eventually moved to florida and i had to take a sabbatical to care, hence i miss washington/maryland/virginia in upper south as well as atlanta anyhow i wish my parents to be listed as an honour to them and they would be there today had dad not passed away thank you for reading this story john g cumming MD bye the way the schruers and mc cabes former mayor live around the corner plus some others mrs schreuers passed last year and mayor mc cabe 3 years ago mom intends to call her as she is well into 90s and saw a for rent sign the other day there is a large ML contingent in vero beach which is v refined/not flashy etc but it is boring for even me regards to who reads this i can still recall embarrased the bunny suit i had to wear as the rabbit in alice in wonderland done at wildwood school gail gumbrect played alice and gary smith played the smoking worm or whatever i still recall my lines, as a comical friendly aside…oh dear oh dear i shall be so late ohhh my ears and whiskers, how late it is getting,, THE DUCHESS THE DUCHESS oh wont she be savage if i keep her waiting as i ran 3 lapsin this dorky rabbit suit mom made w my pocket watch THANK YOU MRS BOONE a superb teacher she drilled us in proper language re:vowels the first one does the talking the second one does the talking engraved in my brain since then there was mrs barkleys school school of social ettiquite and dance which we HAD to go,kicking screaming, pouting to go… learning receiving lines, sitting ladies proper dress for this and that , formal manners training handling a lady—–all when we swimmers would rather be in the pool anyway i just relate a few memories which makes a town a town john g cumming,111,MD 1700 h st nw washington dc 20006, currently at 3939 ocean drive C203,vero beach, fla 32963 772 492.0499

September 16, 2011 at 1:47 am I MOVED TO MT. LAKES IN OCT. OF 1935, AND MOVED AWAY TO CINCINNATI, OHIO IN NOV OV 1985. NOW OF THE “OLD” ONES I DON’T KNOW ANY OF THEM. ARE YOU SURE OF THEIR RESIDENCE?
JIM BARNES
John and I have lived in Mountaiin Lakes for 44 years. We moved here when Cindy Maypole was five. Our son, Jack was a baby. Cindy, Jack and Kim all attended Mountain Lakes schools.
Nancy and Glennis Rickert – Hillcrest – at least 50 years. Brad Rickert, now on Dartmouth – 40+ years. Also Pete and Rosemary Haas (although their house is technically in Denville on Pocono Road) are among the longest residents.
We moved to Mt Lakes in June 1971, so we’ve been here 40 years. We lived 3 years at 11 Woodland Ave and 37 years at 131 Laurel Hill Road. George & Marge Jackson
